Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between 140 g and 180 g vinyl?
Short answer:
The only real difference is weight and thickness—not sound quality.
The key differences
1. Weight & feel
- 140g vinyl: Standard weight, lighter and slightly thinner
- 180g vinyl: Heavier, thicker, often marketed as “premium”
You’ll notice it immediately when you pick it up—180g just feels more substantial.
2. Durability
- 180g records are a bit more resistant to:
- Flexing during handling
- 140g records are still durable, just a little more flexible
That said, both last decades if properly stored.
3. Sound quality (the big myth)
This is where people get it wrong:
👉 Weight does NOT determine sound quality.
Sound quality depends on:
- Mastering (arguably the most important factor)
- Source audio quality
- Pressing quality at the plant
- Vinyl compound
A well-made 140g record can sound identical to a 180g record.
4. Manufacturing & cost
- 140g:
- More cost-effective
- Faster to press (generally)
- Great for larger runs
- 180g:
- Higher material cost
- Often used for deluxe or collector editions
- Slightly longer press cycles
So… which should you choose?
- Go 140g if:
- You want to keep costs down
- You’re doing a standard release
- You care most about sound (and have good mastering)
- Go 180g if:
- You want a premium feel
- It’s a collector’s or high-end package
- You want added durability for shipping/handling
What's your turn time?
Our standard turnaround is ~6–10 weeks from the time everything is approved and ready to go.
That said, timing depends on a few key factors:
- Files ready to roll (final audio + print-ready artwork)
- Project complexity (color vinyl, gatefolds, inserts, etc.)
- Current production capacity
A quick breakdown:
- Week 1–2: Pre-production (file review, plating, test pressings if applicable, ordering print)
- Week 3–6: Pressing + printing
- Week 6–10: Assembly + shipping
The important part
Timelines can shift based on how busy we are, so it’s always best to check in with us for current capacity—especially if you’re working toward a specific release date.
Bottom line
If your files are ready and approved, we can typically deliver within 6–10 weeks—and sometimes faster depending on the schedule.
What about gatefolds, inserts, or box sets
We can produce multi-piece packages, deluxe gatefolds, and collector box sets. Artwork files must be finalized before production begins.
What are your minimums?
Our minimums are 500 units (of any variant)
Do you handle plating in-house?
Yes! All metal plating and galvanics are done in-house at Paramount Pressing and Plating. This ensures:
- Maximum control over sound quality
- Consistent pressings from the first copy to the last
- Faster turnaround without relying on third-party vendors
Our in-house plating allows us to maintain the highest quality standards for every project, whether it’s a standard LP or a deluxe collector edition.
